In Loving Memory ~

Kay Elizabeth Platt of Ladysmith passed away peacefully on April 14, 2024. Born near Uttoxeter, England on November 16, 1924, she grew up on a dairy farm with her parents, Evelyn and Edward Shipley, and two sisters.

In 1944 she met and married her Canadian sailor, Joseph Vincent Platt. A war bride, Kay with her daughter, Rita, arrived in Ladysmith in August 1946 and settled down with Vince on Watts Road to start family life which soon included Joan (1947), Shirley (1949) and Larry (1951).

Kay was an active and dedicated member of the Legion and Ladies Auxiliary for 70 years. Her work in the Executive, on committees, organizing cribbage tournaments and as secretary for 14 years were valuable contributions to the Branch and the community at large.

In 2012 she was surprised, and honoured, to receive the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal. Kay contributed much time and effort at the Ladysmith Golf course in the Executive as well as practicing her skills on the course. Her passions, outside of family life, were the continuing success of the Legion, cribbage, golfing and gardening.

Kay was predeceased by her husband of 60 years in 2004; her daughter, Joan, in 2001; her sister, Lucy (2009) and sons-in-law Ken (2008) and Tony (2020).

She is survived by her sister, Joan and children Rita, Shirley, and Larry (Lois), as well as grandchildren Karla, Chris, Tera, Jeff, Jason, Stephen, Alex, Adrienne and 11 great-grandchildren. Auntie Kay is fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, here and in England.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Cairnsmore Place in Duncan for their care and kindness during the last year.
